The Iconic Australian Argyle Pink Diamond

The Argyle Diamond Mine in Western Australia has been virtually the   only source of the Worlds pink diamonds, supplying almost 90% of pink diamonds globally, no other mine in the World produces diamonds with such and intensity in color than the Argyle Diamond Mine.

So rare in existence, for every million carats of rough diamond only one carat will be classified as a pink diamond. Over the 37 years of the operation of the mine, the Argyle diamond mine has produced over 865 million carats of rough. Only 4000 carats of Argyle pink diamonds are produced a year.

Having exhausted production, and with only limited availability of remaining rough, the mine closed late November  2020 and Argyle Pink Diamonds have never been so popular. Their unique color and limited supply have brought prestige and demand not seen before.

Colored diamonds get their colors from different chemical impurities, for example, yellow diamonds contain nitrogen, creating a yellow hue, the more nitrogen present, the more intense yellow the diamond will be. However, it is a mystery how argyle diamonds get their pink hue. One theory is that the color in pink diamonds is due to the way light is distributed throughout the gem, with a small pink inclusion magnified to make the entire diamond appear pink.
